What do I look for it a fencing coach?

Is the instructor certified to teach fencing?  There are two
bodies of certification in the USA today.  The
USFA
Coaches College and USFCA.  Find out which one your
potential instructor was certified through.  Be careful some
"instructors" are just members of the two organizations and
not certified. You and your child's safety should come first.
Ask to see their certification.

What college's have chosen your fencers to fence on their
NCAA team?

Fencing in college is one of the greatest competitive
challenges that your child try to achieve.  The Knights of
Siena fencing academy has sent dozens of fencers to the
NCAA program.  Some of our students are now even
instructors.  How do you plan on paying for your students
college tuition?

What accomplishments has the instructor had in their
fencing career?

Learning to fence is not hard, learning to fence well and
win is.  Define your fencing goals and then select the
instructor that will help you achieve those goals.  Whether
the goal is to be on the Olympic team, fence in college or
just use fencing for exercise to stay fit and trim.  Your
instructor should embody these goals for you or be able to
show you a plan to achieve them.

Who taught them to fence or teach?

Many fencing "instructors" taught themselves how to fence
and then "learned" how to teach by reading a book.  You
and your children's fencing career are an investment, make
the wise choice. Make sure the instructor has the right
experience and training that you are looking for.
